Una storia che esplora l’amore, il sacrificio e la vulnerabilità attraverso il legame tra Kosuke, un solitario fashion editor, e Ryūta, il suo personal trainer. Quando Kosuke assume Ryūta, un sentimento mai provato lo travolge. I due iniziano a frequentarsi, ma Ryūta sembra avvolto in un mistero che Kosuke è deciso a scoprire.

Non capita spesso di vedere, nel cinema giapponese, un film girato quasi interamente macchina a mano. Eppure la regia di Matsunaga non ha nulla dell’estetica, ormai obsoleta e codificata, del cinema “indie”, bensì persegue una propria intima leggerezza. È difficile afferrare i sentimenti umani, così vivi e imprendibili: Matsunaga sceglie di assecondarli, accogliendoli nella loro immediatezza senza lasciarci certezze: né sulla natura dell’amore, né di carattere etico. Tutto è lasciato al nostro sguardo di spettatori, mentre le emozioni e il sesso (puro e realistico) scorrono sullo schermo nella loro essenza più vera e priva di sovrastrutture.
Kōsuke cerca, nel rapporto col bellissimo Ryūta, di guarire i traumi dell’infanzia. A story that explores love, sacrifice, and vulnerability through the bond between Kosuke, a solitary fashion editor, and Ryūta, his personal trainer. When Kosuke hires Ryūta, he is overwhelmed by a feeling he has never experienced before. The two begin seeing each other, but Ryūta seems shrouded in a mystery that Kosuke is determined to unravel.

It’s rare to see a Japanese film shot almost entirely with a handheld camera. Yet Matsunaga’s direction has nothing to do with the now-codified, outdated “indie” aesthetic; instead, it pursues its own intimate lightness. Human emotions are difficult to grasp—so vivid and elusive. Matsunaga chooses to follow them, to welcome them in their immediacy, leaving us with no certainties: neither about the nature of love nor about ethical boundaries. Everything is entrusted to our gaze as viewers, while emotions and sex (raw and realistic) unfold on screen in their truest form, free from superstructures.

In his relationship with the beautiful Ryūta, Kōsuke seeks to heal the wounds of childhood. Emotion floods and transforms him; desire becomes “selfish” and all-consuming, and the search for a spiritual “home” merges with carnal impulse. Kōsuke is both radiant and deeply human, and the film leaves us with an impression of life’s fragility: pain is intense, and so is beauty; everything flows—illuminated by love.
