SMALL, SLOW BUT STEADY (Keiko, me wo sumasete, 2022)

ALL THE LONG NIGHTS (Yoake no Subete, 2024)

TWO SEASONS, TWO STRANGERS (Tabi to hibi, 2025)

Japanese director Shō Miyake is the subject of his first North American retrospective, entitled Unspoken Gestures: The Films of Sho Miyake. The event will take place at New York’s Metrograph from November 7 to 15, as one of the first stops on an international tour organised by the Japan Foundation, spanning 14 cities in eight countries.
“For a long time, Sho Miyake has been one of international cinema’s best-kept secrets; each of his films arrives quietly, yet with great force, amid the cacophony of contemporary film culture,” said Edo Choi, programmer at Metrograph.
Miyake is receiving growing international recognition and widespread critical acclaim. Shiguéhiko Hasumi described Two Seasons, Two Strangers as “in every sense, a true masterpiece”, while Cahiers du cinéma compared All the Long Nights to the cinema of Leo McCarey, for its ability to transform simplicity into overwhelming emotion.
The retrospective brings together eight works by Miyake, including Playback (2012) and the films that have brought him the greatest recognition, reviewed on Nubi Fluttuanti:
SMALL, SLOW BUT STEADY (Keiko, me wo sumasete, 2022)

One of Miyake’s finest films, balancing a multiplicity of sensations and inspirations, in which words are almost entirely absent.
ALL THE LONG NIGHTS (Yoake no Subete, 2024)

Following the trajectory of many contemporary anime, Miyake’s cinema conveys a sense of unfillable emptiness and difficulties in human relationships in a Japan increasingly unable to give expression to its emotions.
TWO SEASONS, TWO STRANGERS (Tabi to hibi, 2025)

Miyake continues to explore human relationships and art itself, particularly the act of communication.
